Η ΓΗ ταξιδεύει στην Κύπρο: Μετακινούμενη προς πιο βιώσιμη γεωργία

We, the partners of the EARTH project—co-funded by the European Union—held our second in-person meeting in Cyprus, consolidating the collaborative work that began during the first meeting in Madrid.

For this occasion, Eva (from Amaranta TV) and Virginia (from Ciudadanos del Mundo) traveled to Cyprus to meet with Andonis and Avgoustinos (from Breezageri) with the aim of reviewing project progress, coordinating upcoming actions, and further strengthening collaboration among the participating entities.

As part of the gathering, we visited Riverland Biofarm, an educational farm in Cyprus renowned for its innovative organic methods. There, we gained firsthand insight into their sustainable agriculture and livestock farming model. During the visit, we learned how the farm produces traditional foods—such as halloumi, kefir, and other goods—using its own resources, all while developing an integrated, environmentally friendly production system.

We discovered that passion is not the only key ingredient in an agricultural project. Riverland’s sustainability also stems from the diversity of its activities: they host visits from schools and businesses, produce artisanal dairy products, collaborate on research projects with national universities, and organize music festivals. It was inspiring to see how diversity is both necessary and fruitful for achieving sustainability in all its forms.

Another highly inspiring aspect of the visit was seeing the transformation a section of the farm has undergone thanks to syntropic agriculture. In just two years, this regenerative approach has prioritized solutions such as increasing biodiversity to manage pests, using water efficiently, and employing a stratified design—it took us back to our six month on-site training! This has led to significant land restoration, improved soil fertility, and a more balanced ecosystem, demonstrating the model’s potential to address the challenges facing the future of agriculture.

The working meeting also provided an opportunity to take stock of the achievements made since the project began. Partners reviewed key milestones reached to date, assessed the progress of various activities, and planned the next steps to continue advancing EARTH’s objectives.

This second in-person meeting has reinforced the commitment of all participating organizations to promoting sustainable agricultural practices, knowledge sharing, and European cooperation—fundamental pillars for building a project that delivers a positive impact for both local communities and the environment.

In two years it went from being dessert to starting a syntropic forest!
